competition sees players switch from the hard courts in Miami to clay and those in action in this one will have the French Open in their minds and need to find some form on this surface.
It is no surprise that the man named ‘The King of Clay’ – Rafael Nadal – is in action in Monte Carlo on Sunday and he is going for a ninth straight victory in Rolex Masters, so it is safe to say he has dominated here over recent years.
It is going to be tough to stop the Spaniard and if he is able to play his best tennis on clay, no one will be able to live with Nadal as it is the surface he enjoys the most.
Nadal had a long time out of action last year though and with everyone expecting him to win this tournament, it will be interesting to see how he does here.
As ever, there is going to be some fierce competition for the French Open Champion as both Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray are in action.
Djokovic was the runner-up in this tournament last year and also lost in the final to Nadal in 2009, so the Serbian will hope it is the case of third time lucky.
He is the kind of player that won’t like the fact that he is not the one to beat on this surface and you can be sure he is looking to show a lot of people he is a big contender for not only this tournament, but the French Open next month as well.
As for Murray, he has been beaten by Nadal in the semi-finals twice here in Monte Carlo, but as we know, he comes here full of confidence after victory in Miami last time out.
Although he doesn’t have the best record on clay and the win in Miami was on a different surface, the Scotsman has the momentum and will feel as though he has a point to prove here.
Also in action is David Ferrer, who has been consistent this campaign and finished as the runner-up back in 2011.
One thing you are guaranteed with Ferrer is 100 per cent effort and he is sure to feel as though he has a chance here.
Other names to keep an eye on in this Monte Carlo Rolex Masters are Tomas Berdych, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Richard Gasquet.
It is all set to be a cracking tournament and as mentioned, Rafael Nadal is the one to beat and if he gets a good start in the opening stages, he is likely to show just how good he is on clay.
All the action starts on Sunday and with the French Open just over six weeks away, it is all about preparation for the second Grand Slam of the year.
