Mourinho reveals Chelsea woe in 2005 attempted Gerrard signing

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has revealed that departing Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is perhaps his greatest transfer disappointment having attempted to sign him at Chelsea back in 2005.

The Portuguese gaffer targeted the former England captain during his first spell at the club to form what he described as a dream midfielder with Claude Makelele and Frank Lampard.

Discussions took place and the deal was thought to be close before Gerrard ultimately decided he did not want to leave his boyhood club.

As, the 34-year-old ending his 17 year association with the Reds this summer,  having announced he will be joining LA Galaxy in America when his contract expires this summer. The former Real Madrid boss has spoken of his total respect for his opponent.

“He (Gerrard) is a historical player for Liverpool, a historical player for the Premier League and an opponent I have always admired and respected.” Said Mourinho

“We did everything to try (to sign him) and it was almost there. I was dreaming of (Claude) Makelele, Gerrard and (Frank) Lampard in midfield.” He added.

Despite Gerrard’s representatives being open to a move, Mourinho made it clear that the player didn’t once say to him he would be leaving Liverpool.
