Napoli place £78 million price tag on Chelsea target Cavani

Chelsea will have to fork out a whopping £78 million if they want to sign Napoli striker Edinson Cavani this summer according to the Daily Mail.

The Uruguay international is one of the names on Blues boss Roberto Di Matteo’s shopping list as he begins to step up his pursuit of a new front man to replace Didier Drogba.

Porto powerhouse Hulk was said to be close to completing a move to Stamford Bridge last month but interest has since cooled in the 25-year-0ld Brazilian with Di Matteo casting his gaze elsewhere.

Cavani has now emerged as a serious candidate to fill the void left by Drogba after hitting 33 goals in 47 games for the second successive season at the Naples club.

But president Aurelio de Laurentiis is reluctant to part company with his star asset and has warned the European Champions they will have to break the bank to acquire the 25-year-old.

“Cavani is not for sale, but we could let him go for €100m (£78m),” he told Sky Sport Italia. “This is not his actual value, but his value to me and he won’t leave for less.”

Owner Roman Abramovich is said to be a long time admirer of Cavani’s and was impressed by his performance and goal against the West London club in the Champions League last season.
However that won’t be enough to convince the Russian oligarch to write a cheque to the tune of £78m having already splashed out £40m on midfield pair Eden Hazard and Marko Marin.
Abramovich’s pre-season spending will increase once the reported £25m deal to sign Internacional star Oscar is completed this week.
A centre forward and a right back are still considered priorities by Di Matteo but it’s thought he’ll have to lighten the Chelsea wage bill before entering the transfer market again.
