After months of being linked with his PSV counterpart, Erik Pieters, Newcastle United now appear to be opening up their transfer target options at left-back and are eyeing up Ajax defender, Vurnon Anita.
The 22 year-old has featured as both a full-back and defensive midfielder this season, showing himself to be a versatile youngster capable of operating in multiple positions.
Despite his age, Anita has become an integral member of the Ajax first team, making 33 starts for De Godenzonen so far this campaign.
Newcastle United areknown to be in the market for a left-back, stating their interest in PSV star Erik Pieters, who they came inches close to signing last summer.
The deal fell through due to personal issues on Pieters’ side but the transfer will once again become a possibility at the end of this season.
However, Alan Pardew appears to be keeping his options open and regardless of the fact that Davide Santon was eventually signed by the North East outfit in 2011, cover is being sought after.
Anita is also a senior Holland international, having risen through numerous tiers of the Netherlands youth system.
Although he has fallen out of favour under Bert van Marwijk, Anita will be hoping to make his way back into the Dutch side should he complete a Premier League switch.
The Magpies have shown a boost in aspirations over the last few months following a magnificent 2011-12 season and should be able to finance a move for Anita, who is currently valued at around £5m.
