Newcastle have Bilbao left back planned as Enrique replacement

Purchasing a left back instead of giving Shane Ferguson the chance is bafflingNewcastle United’s shortlist is getting shorter where finding a replacement for the possible Jose Enrique departure to Liverpool is concerned, with the latest name to be mentioned as being Athletic Bilbao’s strong left back, Xabier Castillo.

The 24 year old Spaniard has enjoyed spells with Bilbao since he joined in 2009 however he has only played his part in nineteen appearances for the club. Hardly the making of a battle hardened Geordie defender. In all honesty this smells a little of the Newcastle of old, trying to cut corners by purchasing less expensive players in the hope they come good where in reality what they should be doing is securing the services of Enrique.

Finding left backs can be tough, ask England managers before Cole and Bridge turned up! However, is it not best that Newcastle United use their youngsters first before looking abroad? Shane Ferguson has the making of a great player and yes, he is young at 19 but he is an adult, he must be given his chance. Ok, he is regarded more as an attacking option but why not? Is that not what Newcastle United are about?

If the Newcastle owners are looking for a short fix to possibly losing Jose Enrique then they must look to their youngsters rather than buying untested talent, regardless of price or which foot they use best is not the answer.
