Newcastle teen announces first team ambitions

18 year-old Mehdi Abeid has put first team regulars on alert after sounding out his intentions of breaking into the club’s first XI.

Frenchman Abeid was expected to form a part of the Magpies’ reserve team in 2011/12, but after impressing on a trial in June, the youngster has been handed a part in the club’s pre-season plans.

Abeid told the Northern Echo: “I’m very happy to be playing for Newcastle now. I hope I can do well for the club this season and I’m looking forward to the challenge of being a Newcastle player.”

The right-footed midfielder also admitted how the arrivals of fellow Frenchmen like Hatem Ben Arfa and Demba Ba have only encouraged him further.

He stated: “Hatem and Demba have helped me a lot already. It’s good to have them around while I settle in.”

Whether the winger is playing under Alan Pardew or reserve team coach, Peter Beardsley, the 18 year-old Frenchman is sure to make an impact in the north-east in coming seasons.
