Newcastle United eyeing up Premier League stalwart

High-flying Newcastle United are reportedly preparing for another dip into the transfer market with Premier League veteran, Richard Dunne, latest to make the shortlist.

The Magpies are looking to bolster their defence after it was revealed that team anchor, Steven Taylor, would be out for the remainder of the season with an Achilles injury.

Although Dunne isn’t the youngest of defenders, his 400 plus matches of top flight experience would be invaluable to the overwhelming Tynesiders.

The Irishman currently has 18 months left on his contract and is known to have a rocky relationship with Villa manager, Alex McCleish.

As a result, numerous clubs are rumoured to have interest in the club captain, who could be available for as little as £4m.

With Taylor out of the picture for the next six months, Dunne would be expected to feature in the Newcastle starting line-up alongside Fabricio Collocini, Danny Simpson and Ryan Taylor.

The trio have been invaluable to Alan Pardew this campaign and formed the foundation on which the North East outfit went eleven games unbeaten.

Since Talyor’s injury, the Premier League side have been slightly less stable at the back, running out losses against the likes of Norwich and West Brom however the club will be hoping to revive some of that solidity with the signature of Dunne.

The 32 year-old is also a long-term feature on the international scene, making over 70 appearances for the Republic of Ireland over the past decade.

With Newcastle’s luck seemingly on the up, Dunne may be tempted by the move which could set him up for the remainder of his career in a squad that is now shooting for European football.
