The 2/1 available from sponsors Ladbrokes means the ante-post market is centred around Taylor and for punters it really is a case of whether you are with Taylor or against him.
But there are other markets being provided by bookmakers that give you additional options in terms of betting on Taylor’s performance in the tournament.
For example, if you think he will hit the most 180’s, then the 11/4 on offer from Bet365 may float your boat. Taylor also is just 5/4 with Ladbrokes to hit a nine-dart finish in the tournament – something the crowd at Ally Pally would dearly appreciate.
Paddy Power have introduced a special market for punters; one where they can try and predict which player, if any, will knock 13-time champion Taylor out of the tournament.
With Taylor being so dominant in the outright win markets, Paddy Power have introduced Taylor at 2/1 to win the tournament, but from there, the Irish firm have generously given some odds to a variety of big players about their capabilities of knocking Taylor out.
Next in the betting is Robert Thornton, who despite being a 40/1 shot outright and the 12th choice of the punters is being favoured by the markets as the one man that could beat the 13-time champ. His record against the legendary player is pretty incredible.
Thornton is proving to be Taylor’s nemesis as the Scot battled to a final leg victory to beat him in the quarter finals of the Grand Prix before demolishing the Power 11-5 in the final of the UK Open. For him to complete the major hat-trick of Taylor dismissals, you can get 15/2 with Paddy Power.
Taylor, despite him being the subject of massive gambles for this tournament, has disappointed in the last two World Championships. In 2011 he was stunned by Welshman Mark Webster in the quarter-finals before limply being eliminated by Dave Chisnall in the second round in 2012.
Webster sensationally thrashed an out of touch Taylor, who was 1/66 to win the match, 5-2 to cause one of the biggest shocks in Darts history – for him to recreate that occurrence is a whopping 450/1 with Paddy Power.
Chisnall recorded his greatest victory when he defeated Taylor at the Alexandra Palace last year and he can be backed at 35/1 to eliminate Taylor once again.
Other notable players who possess the weapons to de-throne Taylor are Andy Hamilton at 9/1, Aussie raider Simon Whitlock, who is a 12/1 shot and the 2011 and 2012 winner Adrian Lewis, who has generated some market support at 30/1 but has been woefully out of form so far this season.
Remember, if you are planning to have a bet on any of these markets with Labrokes, taking advantage of their £60 in free bets is a must.
