AT & T Pebble Beach Pro-Am & Joburg Open feature for golf punters as Mickelson heads market

Golf heads to the AT & T Pebble Beach Pro-Am & The Joburg Open as Paddy Power release the latest odds on the week’s golf coupon.

Phil Mickelson has been all-the-rage in the betting markets for this week’s A T & T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, for which he heads there as the defending champion.

When you consider Lefty’s recent showing on the PGA Tour, where he demolished the field in the Phoenix Open, shooting 28-under, you can see why punters have been steaming into the 15/2 available with the likes of William Hill and Coral.

Mickelson picked up his 40th career title in 2012 when running out an exciting winner of the tournament following a last day round of eight-under par.

AT & T Pebble Beach & Joburg Open : Paddy Power Offer

Online firm Paddy Power have a host of golf markets for punters to choose from and are paying 4 places each way as they celebrate with a new free bets offer worth £200/€200 to customers to spend on the A T & T at Pebble Beach Pro-Am or Joburg Open – Claim here!

That victory meant he’s now just one of only nine players in history to have won more than 39 titles on the PGA Tour.

This tournament is very well regarded within the world’s media due to its Pro-Am nature. Some big name celebrities are lining up this weekend alongside the pros.

This year world famous sports stars such as baseball stars Besides Verlander, Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly, NFL quarterbacks Tony Romo and Aaron Rodgers, and San Francisco Giants pitcher Matt Cain.

The tournament is played over three courses on the four days, with Spyglass Hill and Poppy Hills being used on day’s two and three. The iconic Pebble Beach is used for the other rounds. Ranked as America’s No 1 public course, Pebble Beach runs alongside the stunning backdrop Monterey Peninsula coastline.

The course itself, where the final day of the tournament is played, favours accurate players from the fairways due to the small-green nature of the layout. The 18th, a picturesque hole alongside the cliffs, is one of the most scenic in world golf. It has held the US Open five times, most recently in 2000 where Tiger Woods triumphed.

From a betting point of view the tournament is one of the hardest to predict due to the wide range of variables that can affect a player’s performance, including the slow nature of having to play with an amateur.

However, there are certain trends that punters should look towards. Pebble Beach’s layout is quite similar to the way in which Scottsdale, the home of the Phoenix Open is set up. It is known that players who perform well at Scottsdale seem to continue their form when playing at Pebble Beach a week later.

That theory only pours more fuel onto the Mickelson fire, and it’s no surprise to see him shortening up in the betting as the tournament approaches.

But rarely are these PGA tournaments so simple. There are 20-30 players that have the capabilities to peak at Pebble Beach and although Mickleson is a very strong favourite he is far from bombproof due his inconsistency.

So what alternatives do we have to the left-handed American?

Our focus is very much on players that looked to be great heart last week at Scottsdale. Perhaps the best value out there in the market currently lies with the chances of Ryan Palmer at 40/1 with Ladbrokes. Palmer played three rounds of exemplary golf last week but threw in a stinker of a day, where he shot 72.

Without that blip he would have finished second rather than fifth. He has dreams of reaching lofty heights this year and 40/1 is a tad disrespectful for a player of his talent.

Nick Watney also is a player that should be a lot shorter than his current odds of 20/1 with Bet365. He, like Palmer, only played badly in one round last week and finished in a share of 43rd. He is a consistent sort around this track and has finished in the top-10 twice in the last six years.
