Peralta, Youkilis and Ethier into All-Star Game

Jhonny Peralta, Kevin Youkilis and Andre Ethier have all been drafted into their league’s All-Star rosters, as replacements for Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez and Shane Victorino respectively. Jeter, the Yankees short stop, was originally in the American League’s starting line-up, however he voluntarily pulled out of the All-Star Game on Friday to rest his injured calf. The Yankees later announced that Rodriguez was to follow him out of the line-up because of a sore knee that also needed rest.

“Unfortunately, I won’t be able to go,” said Jeter, before the Yankees postponed game with Tampa Bay on Friday. Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi later assured everyone that it was Jeter’s own decision, saying that the short stop talked it over with the Yankees’ trainers and came to the decision. In his place in the starting line-up will be Asdrubal Cabrera of the Cleveland Indians, whilst Peralta will fill a roster spot.

At 3rd base Adrian Beltre will get the start instead of A-Rod, with Youkilis of the Red Sox filling the vacant roster spot for the American League. In the National League line-up Dodgers’ outfielder Andre Ethier replaced Shane Victorino of the Phillies. There will likely be a few more changes before the line-ups are finalised on Monday, one of the players hopeful of getting a roster spot is Cardinals’ slugger Albert Pujols, who has made a quicker-than-expected recovery from a broken wrist.
