Five matches will be played at Sheffield on Thursday evening and at this stage of the season, some men have to step onto stage on two occasions. That is the case for league-leaders Michael van Gerwen and James Wade this time out.

It is safe to say that the Dutchman has a tough night ahead as he takes on world number-one Phil Taylor and the lock horns with Wade, who is currently level on points with him.

The first match is against Taylor and after their draw earlier in the season, this is a tough one to call.

Taylor hasn’t been in the best of form recently and he lost to Robert Thornton last time out, so the bookies do make The Power the slight underdog for this clash at 6/4. At that kind of value and with the big-game prowess he has, it is tough to ignore Taylor in this one.

Van Gerwen then takes on Wade in the final match of the night and both will be looking for the points here, especially if Raymond van Barneveld wins earlier in the evening.

This has the potential to be a scintillating match-up between the two of the best players in the league right now.

Wade faces Adrian Lewis as well as van Gerwen, so he is also going to be tested to the maximum on Thursday night.

These two men can be up there with the best of them on their day, but it seems as though Wade is playing the better darts right now.

As mentioned, van Barneveld is in action as he takes on Andy Hamilton and the former world number-one will be looking to keep the pace with the top two this week.

Barney put in a superb display last time out as he beat Adrian Lewis 7-2, so he comes into this one full of confidence, but so does Hamilton after his 7-5 win over Wes Newton.

It is tough to look past van Barneveld here though and he is at 4/6 to come out on top.

The opening match of the night is a battle between Robert Thornton and Simon Whitlock. Thornton will be on a massive high after his victory against Taylor and now he is in the top four, he will be looking to stay there.

The Scotsman has impressed in the Premier League so far and he seems to be getting better as the tournament goes on.

As for Whitlock, he only just avoided relegation and was outclassed by van Gerwen last week, so has to raise his game here. A win for the Australian is at 7/4.

We should be in for an enthralling night of darts in Sheffield on Thursday evening and this is the time where the points up for grabs are more precious than ever.
