The Premier League of Darts heads into its final evening of action tonight before the play-offs take place at London’s 02 Arena next week and we should be in for a cracking night in Newcastle.

Michael van Gerwen, Phil Taylor and Raymond van Barneveld have booked their place in the play-offs and will be looking to take some momentum into next week’s matches, but all eyes are on the fight for fourth right now.

James Wade, Robert Thornton and Simon Whitlock will battle it out for fourth spot and although he is currently in fifth, Thornton knows it is in his hands as he is just a point adrift with a game-in-hand.

The Scotsman couldn’t face a much tougher night though as he locks horns with van Gerwen and van Barneveld, matches he is at 12/5 and 9/2 respectively to win.

Thornton will probably have to win both of them in order to qualify for the play-offs and it is going to take one of the best nights of his career to come out on top.

Wade is the man currently sitting in fourth and a win could be enough for him to stay there come the end of action tonight.

The left-handed thrower takes on Phil Taylor – who has returned to form in recent weeks – so also has a difficult evening ahead of him.

When at his best, there is no doubt Wade can challenge the world number one, but the bookies have him out at 7/2 to take the spoils in this one.

Simon Whitlock has produced a bit of form from nowhere in recent weeks as he was down at the bottom at the start of the campaign but now has a chance of qualifying.

The Australian is two points away from Wade and one adrift of Thornton, so he has to rely on them dropping points if he is to reach the play-offs.

Whitlock takes on already-eliminated Adrian Lewis, before locking horns with van Barneveld and although it is going to be a tough couple of matches, he should be confident he can take maximum points.

With Whitlock v van Barneveld being the final match of the night, it could be a cracker as if the latter wins his first game of the night and van Gerwen loses to Thornton, then Barney could top the table, so he might also have a lot to play for.

The final game to look at is a battle between Andy Hamilton and Adrian Lewis and with both of these men having nothing to play for, pride is all that is stake. In truth, the draw could be the best bet in this one at 4/1.

It should be an enthralling night of action in Newcastle and with so much at stake, we are likely to see some superb darts this evening.

Even the men that have already qualified will be desperate for a result in the north-east, so we could witness plenty of drama and close finishes. The first match is at 7.10pm.
