Wes Newton hurled himself off the bottom of the table with a 6-6 draw with Robert Thornton, which left Adrian Lewis propping up the league after he lost again this time to James Wade.
Andy Hamilton edged out Gary Anderson 7-5 but the performance of the night came from Michael Van Gerwen, who blew away the previous unbeaten Raymond Van Barneveld 7-3, which took him level with Barney on four points from three matches.
Van Gerwen takes on Hamilton this week in Exeter, with punters steaming into the fiery Dutchman to continue his exceptional form of the last week.
Mighty Mike completed a weekend double in the Speedy Services UK Open Qualifiers in Crawley, beating Brendan Dolan 6-2 in Sunday’s final at the K2 Centre, to ram home the notion that he is currently red hot in terms of form.
He averaged over 103 to claim his first ever Premier League win against Barney, following up two draws, and threw two consecutive ten-darters to blow away his Dutch counterpart.
He is on fire at the moment, and Hamilton, although famed for his ability to grind top-quality opponents down with his sharp finishing, may find himself on the end of a hammering of his own.
Van Gerwen has been well supported with Bet365 at 4/9 to record his second win of the campaign whilst Hamilton fans can get 7/2 on their man doing the business.
The correct score markets for this game may be worth a second glance too.
For punters thinking a Van Gerwen steamroll is on the horizon over the limited Hamilton, then taking a look a couple at a couple of correct scores could be of interest. The Dutchman to win 7-3 has been very well backed with at 4/1 with Paddy Power but Ladbrokes have dangled a real carrot on the 7-2 score line, pricing it up at a best-priced 8/1.
Bookmakers are seeing a lot of support in the multiple markets with the Van Gerwen/Taylor double proving very popular.
The current Premier League champion takes on Wade this week, and can be backed at 4/11 with BetVictor to land another knock-out blow.
What made Taylor’s thrashing of Whitlock even more impressive last week was the fact that the Aussie played supremely well, and would have beaten anyone else, bar Van Gerwen.
Wade has been quietly going about his business in recent months, making the semi-finals of the World Championships and playing with confidence in the Premier League. He is a 5/1 shot with Ladbrokes to topple Taylor.
Last week Wade, who didn’t actually play that well, saw off Lewis with ease. The two-time World Champion is in dire straits at the moment and his confidence is at an all-time low.
The bookmakers still have the faith though as they have priced him up as the 11/10 favourite, with Paddy Power standing out as best-price. Newton should have beat the in-form Thornton last week, and was 6-3 up until the Scotsman won the last three legs to force an unlikely draw.
If he plays to that level again, Lewis surely won’t be able to handle him. The 7/4 with Bet365 looks very appealing.
In the nights other games Van Barneveld takes on Whitlock whilst Thornton plays Anderson in a Scottish derby.
