After being linked with the starlet over the previous two transfer windows, Manchester City and Tottenham are said to be reviving a bid to sign Dinamo Zagreb midfielder, Mateo Kovacic.
The Croatian playmaker has earned massive plaudits over recent seasons playing in his native country and has earned comparisons to his compatriot, Luka Modric.
Manchester United were the most prominent club being associated with a move for the playmaker since 2010 but are understood to be reluctant to make the signing after boardroom executives reportedly claimed that they were unwilling to pay for his £10m price-tag.
The reports say that those in the Red Devils setup who are against the signing fail to see the point in signing such a young player for such a high asking price, seemingly because it defeats the point of grooming him amongst their own ranks.
As a result, Spurs and City are raising interest all over again and could make a move in these waning days of the January transfer window.
Harry Redknapp hinted last month that his North London outfit were ready to make a ‘major signing’ this month; something Kovavic could potentially represent.
The 17 year-old has already been linked with Modric for their similarity in passing and creative styles and it may prove highly profitable for the youngster as well as Redknapp to link up with his mentor on a club level.
City would obviously not have the same issue in spending as their bitter rivals United, and it would be a subtle victory to edge their neighbours in the race for a player that Sir Alex Ferguson has had his eye on for some time.
