It seems Chelsea and Manchester United are ready to step up the intensity in their hunt of Christian Eriksen, after seemingly losing out on numerous early targets.
Among the players who are unlikely to be on the move are Bundesliga pair Marco Reus and Mario Gotze, who have committed their futures to Dortmund, with the former set to sign in the summer.
Another big name who may not be on his way to Old Trafford is Wesley Sneijder, after Inter confirmed their interest in Manchester City’s Carlos Tevez, with the Dutchman likely to be used as a makeweight in the deal.
Lastly comes Luka Modric, who seems intent on staying at White Hart Lane until the end of the season after a year of transfer uncertainty.
Although Eriksen is an alternative acquisition, he is by no means an inferior one.
In 17 Eredivisie appearances this season, the Danish international has made eleven assists as well as contributing four goals.
The attacking midfielder also played a key role in Ajax’s Champions League run this campaign, and despite failing to reach the Round of 16, the 19 year-old managed to showcase his talent in all six of his club’s matches.
Eriksen has been a long-term target for both sides, however it’s arguable that Manchester United have more of a desperate need for his services as the struggle to cope with a raft of team injuries.
That won’t stop Chelsea however, who are looking to build a squad powerful enough to secure a Champions League place, with Frank Lampard supposedly on his way out of the side.
Neither club will be too put off by Eriksen’s £23m price-tag, as the teen can already boast a boatload of first-team experience on a club and international scale.
