Rangers go into this weekend’s clash with arch rivals Celtic looking to give themselves a welcome boost following an extremely difficult few weeks for the club.
The SPL Champions entered administration last month and whether the club will still exist at the end of the current campaign came into question at one stage. On the pitch, things haven’t been much better.
Ally McCoist’s men have lost three of their last four games in the league, including back to back defeats against Dundee United and Hearts. This means they are now 21 points behind league leaders Celtic going into this weekend.
With this in mind, it might be called into question whether this Old Firm derby is too important for Rangers, but in many ways, it is the most crucial for years.

First of all, the club needs a boost. They need something to go their way and what better than a victory over Celtic? Then, perhaps they can start looking forward positively.
Secondly, they need to make sure they finish 2nd in the table. At the moment they are level on points with Motherwell and this looks set to be a tight battle between now and the end of the season. They cannot slip out of the top two.
As for Celtic, they will look to use Sunday’s fixture as a chance to rub salt into the wounds of Rangers. It is also a chance to win the league at the home of their local rivals if other results go their way, something which could help them recover from the disappointment of losing to Kilmarnock in the League Cup final last weekend.
Looking at the form of Neil Lennon’s men in the league, the 1-1 draw with Aberdeen last time out actually ended a run of 17 successive SPL wins, so they will want to get back to winning ways on Sunday.
As far as the team news is concerned for this weekend, Rangers are hopeful that Kyle Lafferty could come back in to boost their attacking options. For Celtic, winger James Forrest is set for a late fitness test, while there are no other fresh injury concerns for the league leaders.
The atmosphere is set to be electric for this one and it gets underway at 1pm on Sunday afternoon.
