Reading have confirmed the signing of midfielder Danny Guthrie on a free transfer from Newcastle United.
The 25-year-old, who left the Magpies after failing to agree a new contract, completed his medical at the Royals on Friday and the transfer will officially go through on 1st July.
Guthrie came through the ranks at Liverpool and Manchester United before coming to prominence during a loan spell with Bolton before Kevin Keegan brought him to Tyneside prior to the 2008/09 season.
He struggled to maintain a place in the starting XI during his four-year spell at St James’ Park making 104 appearances and scoring nine times for Newcastle.
After putting pen-to-paper on a three year deal at the Madjeski Stadium Guthrie told Readings official website that moving to the club was a ‘no brainer’ after meeting with manager Brian McDermott and Director of Football Nick Hammond.
“It feels brilliant to have everything agreed, it is a great honour and I am very excited,” he said.
“As soon as I met the manager and Nick Hammond my mind was made up, it was a no-brainer.
“Reading Football Club is a fantastic family club, well run and I’m so excited to be part of something special for this club.”
McDermott also spoke of his delight at capturing Guthrie and believes he could become part of the Royal’s furniture in years to come.
He said: “We’re delighted Danny is signing for us. He’s brings good experience at a good age, he has real ability to pass the ball, he’s got energy, he’s hungry and is what Reading is all about.
We’re looking to add players who we think will be good for us over a number of years, not just next season, adding to the players who have already done fantastically well for us.”
