Real Madrid are looking to make Chelsea’s Ashley Cole their number one target after it was revealed that Tottenham’s Gareth Bale had signed a new four and a half year deal.
With Real Madrid currently using the very impressive Marcelo in the left back position it looks as though manager Jose Mourinho is looking to reunite himeself with Cole during the summer should the Portuguese decide on staying at the Bernabeu.
Whilst Marcelo is certainly a bright prospect for the future still only at the age of 22, Cole at 30 years of age would make a high quality acquisition although in reality, it is unlikely that either player will settle for a role relating to squad rotation and it would ultimately leave on player unhappy.
However with the amount of fixtures top teams currently have over a season, the signing of a quality back up is not new and although these things can cause tension, it gives a team good strength in-depth. With Cole now the wrong side of 30 a transfer fee for the left back will be much less than perhaps two or three years ago and with the defender stating he was fed up in England early in 2010 he may wish to end his career abroad to seek a new challenge before hanging up those skilful boots.
