Having competed in the Champions League for the first time this season, Real Sociedad are keen to return for a second successive year although the San Sebastian side are still four points off the qualification spots in fifth place.

With the last fortnight seeing no action in La Liga, it has allowed Real Sociedad to rest many of their key stars over the Christmas period meaning that the likes of Xabi Prieto will be fit for the upcoming derby.

One factor that could make the difference for the home side in Sunday’s derby clash is the form of Sociedad’s strikers with Carlos Vela and Antoine Griezmann who have scored 19 goals between so far this season.

Athletic are enjoying a much better time of things this season and are back to their best form with Ernesto Valverde’s side sitting fourth in the table with a four point gap to their arch-rivals.

Valverde will also have a full squad to choose from with the former Europa League finalists looking to Iker Muniain and Markel Susaeta to provide much of their attacking threat.

Despite increasing speculation about a possible move, midfielder Ander Herrera has re-affirmed his commitment to the club which will no doubt help boost club morale on the pitch with much of their best play going through the creative playmaker.

In the other main game of the weekend, Barcelona will look to regain top spot with a home win against a struggling Elche side.

Barcelona will need to get a win to draw level with Atletico Madrid who beat Malaga on Saturday to ensure that the pressure remains on the defending La Liga champions.

The defending champions will still be without Lionel Messi who is still out injured whilst midfielder Sergio Busquets is suspended after picking up five yellow cards.

Their opponents Elche are struggling for form having lost four out of their last five fixtures and are now languishing in 14th place in the standings.

Ahead of their trip to the Nou Camp, the away side will be forced into making two changes as both Damian Suarez and Coro are suspended after picking up 5 yellow cards.

Although Barcelona could steal the headlines over the weekend, many people will keep an eye on the Basque derby to see whether it’ll be Real Sociedad or Athletic Bilbao who will be in pole position to fill the final Champions League spot as the second half of the season gets underway.
