Roberto Martinez calm over McCarthy contract talks

Wigan Athletic manager, Roberto Martinez, is cooling rumours that contract negotiations have stalled with midfielder, James McCarthy.

McCarthy, who was a key part of the Latics’ survival last season, has drawn heavy interest from Liverpool this summer, as well as other Premier League clubs.

Speaking to the Wigan Observer, Martinez noted: “We have been working really hard to give the players the rewards they have deserved, and as you can imagine James is one of those players.”

“But the talks are very much ongoing, and there will be a successful resolution. It’s not as if he is in his last year – he already has a long-term contract here,” the Spaniard added.

The Republic of Ireland international has made a big impression on the top flight since his move from Hamilton in 2009, and Premier League sides remain ready to pounce should negotiations break down.
