Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that he has no intention to take penalty duties away from current taker Wayne Rooney, despite the player having an unimpressive recent record.
Following his miss from the spot against United’s recent victory over Bolton at Old Trafford, the England international has now missed four of his last eight attempts from 12 yards, resulting in speculation that Fergie would give the duty to someone else.
However, leading up to Sunday’s vital Premier League clash against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, the Scottish boss is adamant that Rooney would not be dropped from taking penalties unless he requests to be.
Ferguson said: “I don’t know who will take the penalties against Arsenal. Absolutely, Wayne wants to keep on taking them. It’s a question that’s down to him really, definitely.
“If he is happy to take them, I am happy to suffer.”
Meanwhile, Rooney has confirmed that he will not let his current penalty form play on his mind, and is happy to continue to take the spot-kicks.
Rooney told MUTV: “Of course I’ll still take the penalties. These things happen – sometimes you miss.
“It’s not nice to miss but I’m not worried about it. I thought I played OK (against Bolton). I got two assists.”
