Liverpool take ‘crazy’ eight-point lead after ‘wild’ victory over Manchester City

Published

on

Liverpool head into the November international break with an eight-point lead at the top of the Premier League table after defeating Manchester City 3-1 at Anfield on Sunday.

Jurgen Klopp described the position his side find themselves in at such an early stage of the season as ‘crazy’ but insisted his team are not feeling any pressure – yet.

“That’s crazy. Nine points, you cannot imagine that something like this happens,” the German told reporters, referring to the nine-point gap opened up between Liverpool and last season’s champions Manchester City, who have now slid to fourth place behind Leicester and Chelsea.

“But it is not important because who wants to be first in early November? We want to be first in May and not only in November.

“The pressure is not there yet. Maybe it will come, but in the moment it is just opportunity and go for it, do the work, throw all in what you have and then let’s see what happens.”

Such caution is understandable given that Liverpool found themselves in a familiar position last season, only for City to overhaul a seven-point deficit by winning fourteen consecutive matches to close out the season.

But on Sunday’s evidence, this is a different Liverpool now. They’re the champions of Europe; the ‘mentality monsters’ as Klopp has frequently described them, and will take some stopping.

Last season, when City visited Anfield at a similar stage of the season, there was a degree of fear from the home side – and they were fortunate to avoid defeat after Riyad Mahrez missed a penalty late on.

Lessons appeared to be have learned from that mentality – and the dropped points which proved decisive as City won the title by a solitary point – as they took the game to City far more this time around.

Indeed, it may be a different City this campaign, too. Despite pinning Liverpool in their own defensive third at the back-end of both halves, City’s defensive vulnerabilities were ruthlessly exposed by two counter-attacks in the first thirteen minutes.

First man-of-the-match Fabinho fabulously struck from distance; then Mohamed Salah doubled the lead from close-range after Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson brilliantly combined in the build-up phase.

“In the beginning, not only because of us, it was wild … We scored two incredible goals,” Klopp gleefully said.

“The second goal we scored, I don’t think I ever saw a goal like this. A right full-back with a 60-yard pass to the left full-back; two more touches and a cross over 40 yards, and a header. That’s pretty special.”

It could have been very different. In the build-up to Fabinho’s opener, the ball appeared to strike Alexander-Arnold’s arm in Liverpool’s penalty area, albeit directly ricocheting from Bernardo Silva’s arm, too.

City manager Pep Guardiola was incensed, raising two fingers in the air to imply ‘twice’ after another debatable handball incident in the second-half, but Klopp remained nonplussed on the issue.

“I didn’t see it yet, the handball before Fabinho scores. I can’t say anything about it.

“What I heard was handball from Bernardo Silva, I don’t know, but I can imagine it’s not a situation Pep is really pleased with. That’s normal.”

The debate will rumble on, but Fabinho’s goal stood – as does Liverpool’s lead at the top.

Arsenal will NOT sack manager Unai Emery despite worst start in 37 years

Published

on

Arsenal are reportedly going to back manager Unai Emery 100% and will not give him the boot, despite the Gunners’ worst start to a top-flight season since 1982.

This comes following a bitterly disappointing 2-0 defeat to top-four rivals Leicester City on Saturday, which helped confirm Arsenal’s terrible start even further.

The Gunners currently sit in 6th place of the Premier League table, having only amassed 17 points in 12 games and have only won four out of those games.

Unai Emery’s side have benefited from the fact that their rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United have had worse starts than them.

The Spanish coach is one of the favourites to be the next manager to be sacked, with the bookies’ odds at 2/1 – only Southampton manager Ralph Hassenhutl has shorted odds of being sacked.

With that being said, it is reported that Arsenal’s board of directors are happy with the former Paris Saint-Germain manager and feel that results will turn around under his leadership.

The Gunners’ hierarchy viewed the fixture against Leicester a very competitive one in which Emery’s men showed positive signs of improvement.

The directors, which includes the likes of owner Stan Kroenke and his son Josh as well as head of football Raul Sanllehi and technical director Edu, notice the fans displeasure in Arsenal’s performances under Emery and are vary of the talk surrounding the Spaniard.

However, they will not act and make decisions based on the noise surrounding the coach and the performances of the team.

The Gunners have been in terrible form over the last five games in all competitions- three draws and two losses.

The draws came against considerable weaker opponents in Vitoria, Wolves and Crystal Palace, whereas their losses were against better opposition in Leicester and Liverpool.

Yet, Liverpool featured a heavily inexperienced line-up as it was a round of 16 Carabao Cup tie in which Jurgen Klopp’s men managed to steal a win on a penalty shoot-out.

Emery signed with Arsenal ahead of the start of the 2018-19 season and took over the legendary Arsene Wenger.

The 48-year-old signed a three-year deal and stated that he preferred to win 5-4 rather 1-0 in a bid to carry on the legacy that his predecessor left.

However, with a full season already under the belt as well as ample backing in the summer transfer window, the former Sevilla coach has yet to implement a clear style of play.

Reports have come out suggesting that Emery cannot translate his ideas to his players possibly due to the fact that English is a foreign language for him.

Tension with the highest earner at the club and one of the star players in Mesut Ozil, as well as the huge substitution affair with Granit Xhaka, has added huge pressure on Emery’s shoulders.

Fans seem divided on Emery’s ability to lead and the Spaniard will have to turn around the results and performances in order to ease the pressure off.

Real Madrid ready to offer James Rodriguez to acquire Manchester United star Paul Pogba

Published

on

Spanish giants Real Madrid are willing to include James Rodriguez in a potential cash plus player deal for Manchester United star Paul Pogba in January.

The French international was heavily linked with a move to Los Blancos in the summer but a transfer failed to materialise, forcing the midfielder to stay at Old Trafford.

Pogba hinted at a potential exit in an interview over the summer stating that the summer would have been a great opportunity for a new challenge.

However, the Red Devils stood firm and refused to let the player leave, with Real Madrid reportedly unwilling to offer the incredible asking price of £180m for the World Cup winner.

The 26-year-old has rarely featured for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side this season due to a number of injuries, with the latest being a broken toe.

Pogba is set to return in mid-December, which is just in time for a Premier League clash against rivals Manchester City.

So far, Pogba has only featured in 6 games in all competitions, registering 2 assists which were both attained in a 4-0 thrashing of Chelsea in the first Premier League game of the season.

The relationship between Pogba and United has been a constant topic in the media, especially when it hit an all-time low when the Frenchman clashed with former United manager Jose Mourinho.

Ever since then, rumours have been circulating about a potential exit from Old Trafford and Real Madrid have always been the most likely destination.

Los Blancos are 5/1 to sign the former Juventus midfielder in January which is significantly lower than the odds of a return to Juventus, which is set at 12/1.

Real Madrid’s arch-nemesis Barcelona are an outside bet to sign Pogba with the bookies setting odds for a move to the Nou Camp at 20/1.

Without the talismanic midfielder, United have struggled as Solskjaer’s side currently sit in a measly 14th place with just 13 points in 11 games.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid sit atop the La Liga table but Zinedine Zidane’s side have not been at their best throughout the season.

James Rodriguez, who was on loan at Bayern Munich for the last two seasons, returned to the Santiago Bernabeu and has featured in most of Los Blancos’ fixtures.

The Columbian has however only registered two-goal contributions in 9 appearances for Zidane’s squad and has already suffered multiple injuries this season.

Rodriguez and Zidane’s relationship was fractured for a long time and the 28-year-old has only started five starts as it looks like the French manager has little faith in him.

Zidane has been a long admirer of Pogba and with Rodriguez heavily linked with a move away from the Spanish capital in the summer, this move could be beneficial for both the clubs and the players.
