Russian return likely for Arsenal attacker

It appears as if Andrey Arshavin may yet complete a move away from the Emirates Stadium before the summer with former club Zenit St. Petersburg ready to sign the winger.

Although the English transfer window slammed shut on the 31st January, the windows of Russia and South America aren’t set to close for another three weeks.

Anzhi Makhachkala have appeared as the frontrunners to sign Arshavin over recent months, however Zenit now have greater need for their former charge with star player, Danny, ruled out until October.

The 28 year-old Portuguese international was injured in pre-season training in Italy and is out for the next eight months with a cruciate ligament injury.

The attacker, who will now miss the Euro 2012 tournament, suffered an identical injury to the same knee in 2009 but remains confident of returning.

Speaking to the Zenit website, Danny said: “I keep thinking about the knee. I don’t have much physical pain there, I have it in my heart. It’s much worse in my head. But I will do everything I can to come back and be a winner.”
Arshavin has fallen out of favour with Arsenal in recent months and with the emergence of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain as a first team starlet, his chances of playing time now appear even slimmer.

Zenit have been linked with the 30 year-old in the past with a fee of £8m being discussed to acquire his signature.
