It is an encounter that has been dominated by Big Bucks over the last four years, but Paul Nicholls’ legendary jumper is out of this year’s Festival with an injury.
Of course, that is a big blow to supporters as they would love to see him make in five-in-a-row at Cheltenham, but what it has done is make the betting for this World Hurdle wide open and a number of horses could now go on to win this one.
At the moment, there are joint-favourites in the shape of Reve De Sivola and Oscar Whisky and the latter was leading the way during much of the build up, but the bookmakers clearly see something in the former for Thursday’s big race.
Maybe it is the fact that over this distance of around three mules, Reve De Sivola has looked comfortable this campaign and won his last two races.
Oscar Whiskey hasn’t adjusted quite so well to the longer distance, but he is trained by Nicky Henderson, who is on top of the world after Sprinter Sacre’s incredible win in the Queen Mother Champion Chase on Wednesday.
Spirits in Henderson’s camp are very high and that should be a good sign for Oscar Whiskey here.
As ever in these big races though, a number of contenders are capable of coming out on top and you have to say that someone like Solwhit has a chance on Thursday. He is an 8/1 shot and won his last race in January. However, Solwhit is another horse that hasn’t won over three miles recently.
Bog Warrior is then a 9/1 shot, with Get Me Out Of Here and Peddlers Cross at 10/1.
Nicholls does have a chance of a winner, despite Big Bucks not running as Wonderful Charm is at 11/1. It would be a bit of an upset if Wonderful Charm won here, but with the knowhow Nicholls has in this encounter, don’t write him off just yet.
One more horse that is grabbing a lot of attention is 12/1 contender Smad Place, who is trained by Alan King. He hasn’t been seen yet this year, but King managed a winner on Wednesday at Cheltenham and Smad Place certainly look like good each-way value.
The other big race on Thursday is the Ryanair Chase, with sees a talented card in action.
Previous winners Riverside Theatre and Albertas Run are set to run and can be backed 6/1 and 14/1 respectively.
Many are expecting a straight shootout between 11/8 shot First Lieutenant and Cue Card though, who is out at 10/3.
The Ryanair Chase takes place just before the Ladbrokes World Hurdle and it should be a great way to warm the crowd up for the big race of the day.
This year’s World Hurdle is a very interesting one that looks to be one of the closest races of the week.
