The big game of the day takes place on Sunday evening and it sees Napoli take on Roma at the Stadio San Paolo in what is sure to be a battle between the sides in fifth and sixth respectively.

Both want to be finishing in the top three this campaign and know that it is games like this that they must be winning in order to do that. Walter Mazzarri’s side finished their 2012 campaign with a much needed away win at Siena, while Edinson Cavani could be on his way in the summer.

Elswhere, Udinese entertain Inter Milan in what should be a superb 90 minutes of action. Inter are in fourth place right now, but just a point adrift of Lazio in second, so a result here is vital.

Andrea Stramaccioni’s side could only draw at home to Genoa in their final game of 2012, and with the Wesley Sneidjer fiasco not yet finalised, this could continue to cast a shadow over the Nerazzurri’s start to the new year.

It is tough to know what Udinese side they will come up against though as on their day, they can be a match for anyone, but they haven’t shown any consistency this season.

Juventus will be looking to maintain their healthy lead at the top of Serie A with a comfortable home win against Sampdoria, who come to Turin on the back of three defeats. Anything other than a win for Juve would be a big shock.

Antonio Conte will be hopeful of the services Athletic Bilbao striker Fernando Llorente, who is currently in negotiations with the club and looks to move to Italy.

Atalanta make the journey to Chievo as well and with these two being separated by just a point at the moment, it should be an interesting 90 minutes.

Fiorentina have surprised a few this term as they are in third place and look like being contenders for a Champions League spot. They host Pescara this weekend, knowing that three points are a must, especially as their opponents are just two points above the bottom three.

Parma managed back-to-back wins before Christmas and it saw them enter 2013 in the top eight of this Italian top flight. They will be after another victory on Sunday when they lock horns with Palermo, who need the points for very different reasons as they occupy a space in the drop zone.

AC Milan are in action on home soil as well as they go head-to-head against bottom of the table Siena, so a convincing win for the hosts is expected. Milan saw their four game winning streak come to an end last time out as they were defeated 4-2 by Roma, so a reaction is needed from Massimiliano Allegri’s men.

Its been an eventful week for the Rossoneri with Kevin Prince Boateng standing up against racism as he walked off the pitch in their friendly against Pro Patria at Stadio Carlo Speroni, while Alexandre Pato has joined Corinthians after spending 5 years with the Italians

Looking at Saturday’s action, the early kick-off sees Catania and Torino lock horns. Both are sitting in mid-table at the moment and know if they start the year with a few wins, then they can look up the league, rather than over their shoulders.

Lazio are now unbeaten in seven matches, so are sure to be full of confidence when they take on Cagliari, who are hovering just above the bottom three after five straight defeats.

Lazio have a chance to move within give points of league-leaders Juventus with a win, which could put pressure on them to get a result this weekend.

It should be a fitting way to round off a superb start to 2013 in Serie A.
