At this stage of the season, all players are turning their attention to the Masters – which gets underway next month – and this tournament is the perfect chance to build some momentum and confidence.

The Houston Open is steeped in history and has been going since 1946. At the moment, the prize fund stands at $5,900,000, so there is a substantial amount of money to be won here.

Hunter Mahan is the defending champion in this compeition and he is sure to be a contender this week.

Mahan hit an impressive 16-under-par in 2012 on this course and something similar would give him a great chance of claiming back-to-back titles. The American also lives in Texas, so he would love to put on a show in front of his home fans.

At the moment, he is available at 16/1 to come out on top here.

Phil Mickelson hit a superb 20-under-par back in 2011 and is also a 16/1 shot for this Houston Open. The left-handed American often performs on the biggest stage and is sure to have one eye on the Masters next month.

Mickelson is enjoying a decent season so far as he has already won a PGA Tour event and finished in the top ten four times, so he does come into this one in some good form.

Although these two have the knowhow in this tournament, the current favourite is Rory McIlroy as he is being offered at 10/1.

It hasn’t been a very good year for McIlroy so far as he has failed to land a place in the top three in his seven events so far and has missed the cut on two occasions.

He has also been knocked off the world-number one spot by Tiger Woods, but in many ways, that could suit the Northern Irishman as he is going to be hungry for success here. A win needs to come sooner rather than later and this Houston Open looks to be the perfect place for him to record a victory.

Both Keegan Bradley and Steve Stricker come into this one in decent form and they are each at 14/1 to win in Texas this week. Out of the two though, Stricker looks the better value as he has managed to finish in the runner-up position twice this campaign.

As ever, there are a number of contenders all hopeful of winning this tournament and you can back Brant Snedeker, Dustin Johnson and Louis Oosthuizen at 25/1. Lee Westwood could then be a decent bet at 33/1.

It does look like being four days of entertaining golf and in truth, many will be happy that Tiger Woods is not involved as he looks unstoppable at the moment.

This is a chance for players to prove they can win the Masters next month and for McIlroy to show he is ready to challenge for the number-one spot once more.
