This is the leading professional tournament that the sport has to offer and it is steeped in history as it was created back in 1927.

All eyes are on the current champion and four-time winner of this compeition – Ronnie O’Sullivan – as he returns to the table after nearly a year out of action.

O’Sullivan has had his personal problems over the years and he has admitted that the World Championships might not be the dream return to the sport that many are hoping for as he is of course very rusty.

However, when it comes down to pure talent, O’Sullivan takes some beating and if he can get a good start, then expect him to get better and better and the tournament goes on.

He is being offered at 13/2 to come out on top here, which makes him the joint favourite with Neil Robertson and Mark Selby. O’Sullivan locks horns Marcus Campbell in the first round, which is a match he should be winning comfortably.

Selby is in excellent form at the moment as he has claimed the Masters and the UK Championships recently, so many will feel as though he is the one to beat here.

The man from Leicester seems to have an incredible amount of patience and is able to grind out results. With the knowhow he has in big tournaments, Selby is one to keep an eye on here. His first opponent is Matthew Selt.

As for Robertson, he won here in 2010 and has been playing some good Snooker in the last year or so, which means he does look to be decent value at 13/2. He takes on Robert Milkins in the first round and like most of the front-runners, is looking to build his confidence in the early stages.

Judd Trump had a spell as the world-number one, but Selby has knocked him off that spot and the youngster is being offered at 15/2 to go one better than he did in 2011.

When on form, there aren’t many players that can stop Trump, but his inconsistency is the problem and although he could win the tournament, he might also crash out in the first round to Dominic Dale.

Five-time World Champion John Higgins is never to be written off at the Crucible and he is being offered at 13/1 to come out on top, with Ding Junhui available at 12/1 and Mark Allen at 15/1.

Stephen Maguire and Shaun Murphy can both be backed at 18/1 at this stage.

With the first round often throwing up a few surprises, the odds are likely to change when the first set of matches are completed.

As mentioned, O’Sullivan is the man that many are coming to see and if at his best, we are likely to see him lifting the trophy for the fifth time.

However, there are a lot of players capable of winning here and it is all set to be one of the best World Championships over recent years.
