Southampton v Everton Odds : Firm reports plenty of money for Leighton Baines in first goalscorer market

Monday night football returns as Paddy Power release the latest odds on Southampton v Everton as the Saints attempt to respond to Nigel Adkins sacking.

These two have very different ambitions for the campaign, with the Saints looking to beat the drop and the Toffees trying to break into the top four, so it should be an interesting watch.

A lot has changed at Southampton this week though as they sacked manager Nigel Adkins on Friday morning, something that came as a massive shock to many as he was doing such a great job at the club.

Adkins had secured back-to-back promotions with the Saints and they were sitting in 15th position in the top flight. However, they must now move on and try to get three points on Monday evening.

Mauricio Pochettino has already been appointed as the first-team manager and he will take charge of Monday’s encounter knowing that he needs to get off to a flying start.

The former Espanyol boss is likely to be under pressure from the fans straight away as they were very much behind Adkins.

He does inherit a squad full of confidence though as they have managed to go on a five-game unbeaten run in the Premier League and came back from 2-0 down to draw at Chelsea on Wednesday evening.

Rickie Lambert has now netted ten goals in the top flight and is sure to cause the Everton defence a number of problems here, especially if the home side get the service right for him. It might be a strange atmosphere at St Mary’s, but Southampton really do need the points in this one.

As for Everton, they currently sit in fifth position, but could be six points adrift of a Champions League spot by the time they kick-off in this one, so a victory might be vital.

David Moyes’ men have made themselves very tough to beat this season, but the Scot will feel as though they have drawn too many games.

They are expected to take the spoils in this one and if Leighton Baines is on form and gets his deliveries right for the likes of Nikica Jelavic and Marouane Fellaini, then the Merseyside club could enjoy a fantastic afternoon.

The 0-0 draw against Swansea City over the weekend was the first time that the Toffees had not scored a goal in the top flight this campaign, so they will be desperate to get at least one goal on the South Coast on Monday evening.

The attacking football that Everton play on their day is right out of the top drawer.

They just have to be clinical and take any chances presented to them, especially against a team near the bottom of the table. Also, the back four need to remain solid as Southampton are another very good attacking unit.

It should be an interesting encounter on Monday evening and both sides will feel as though they have enough to come out on top. When looking at this one, you have to say that goals are expected.
