Spanish international and failed Arsenal target, Juan Mata, is understood to be in London today for a medical with Chelsea.
After Arsenal and Tottenham both failed to sign the youngster with bids between £19m-£22m, Andre Villas-Boas took advantage of the situation and has agreed a £16m fee with Valencia.
The Spanish outfit released a statement on their website, reading: “Valencia Football Club has reached an agreement in principle with Chelsea FC for the transfer of the player Juan Manuel Mata. The agreement is subject to the relevant medical tests.”
The World Cup winner’s move will only pile more pressure on Arsene Wenger, who pondered the transfer for around a month, before his Chelsea counterpart looks to have wrapped up a deal in less than a week.
Villas-Boas will be hopeful the Spanish trickster can inject some creativity and supply to his strikers, both of which seemed to be lacking in the Blues’ desperate 2-1 win over West Brom on Saturday.
