Sunderland FC manager Steve Bruce insists he was correct by not purchasing a new striker in January and claims the transfer figures asked for certain forwards were “astronomical”.
Sunderland sold their main source of goals Darren Bent to Aston Villa for a reported fee of around £22m in January with many expecting Bruce to find an immediate replacement. However the Blackcats boss feels the summer will present a perfect opportunity to find value.
“At the time we couldn’t really bring in a striker who would have made a difference, we were quoted astronomical money, stupid things. In the end we decided to keep a bit back for the summer when we can get value for money.”
Bruce added.
“Of course I didn’t know we were going to collapse like we did but I still think it was the right decision.”
Sunderland are currently rumoured to be targeting three strikers over the summer with Peter Crouch suggested to me Bruce’s main priority.
