Steve McClaren resigns as manager of Nottingham Forest

McClaren's time as Nottingham Forest manager has come to an endSteve McClaren has resigned as manager of Nottingham Forest after picking up just eight points from ten matches since his arrival in June.

The resignation, which has been confirmed by Nottingham Forest’s official website, marks the end of what has been a turbulent ride for the former England manager and more notably, for the fans. Defeat this weekend at home to Birmingham, succeeded an embarassing 5-1 defeat away to Burnley.

McClaren had maintained that he would stay on at the club despite the pressure he was under and he had always suggested that he was not able to make certain transfers to help build the squad with the team making more sales than bringing new players in over the summer.

His last home match against main rivals Derby County also ended unhappily, losing 2-1 after Derby were reduced to ten men after just a few minutes of the match played. The resignation comes just months after joining the Championship side from Wolfsburg whom he managed in the Bundesliga but was sacked prior to Felix Magath taking over.

A statement on the clubs official website read:

“Nottingham Forest can confirm that Steve McClaren has resigned from his role as manager.”

“McClaren, who had been charge at The City Ground since June, informed Chairman Nigel Doughty of his decision after today’s 3-1 home defeat by Birmingham.”

“He has left the club without compensation – nor will he be seeking any.”

“The club can confirm that the search for a new manager will begin immediately.”

With the search beginning immediately there will of course be many names chucked into the hat as speculation continues to grow and it shall be interesting over the coming week who the Nottingham Forest board believe will be best to replace Steve McClaren.
