Sunderland manager, Steve Bruce, is hoping to tie up a deal for Tottenham striker, Peter Crouch, as he seeks to add a killer touch to his offense.
The Black Cats played out to a goalless draw against Swansea City over the weekend and failed to score against Newcastle last week.
Striking options have been limited at the Stadium of Light recently. After the departure of Darren Bent last season, the team have brought in Connor Wickham and Ji Dong-Won as backup, but are still looking for a forward with top flight experience to partner Asamoah Gyan.
Stephane Sessegnon has been forced up from his regular midfield position to provide more attacking support than usual.
Bruce will be going head to head with Tony Pulis for Crouch’s signature, as Stoke look for more attacking options also.
