It appears as if Sunderland are hoping to take advantage of Wolves’ dwindling form and make a move for striker Kevin Doyle.
The Republic of Ireland international hasn’t enjoyed his most prolific form this season with only two goals and three assists but has shown on his day that he is a more than capable frontman.
Martin O’Neill is presumably trying to sign the forward as offensive reinforcement after Nickals Bendtner suffered a facial injury last weekend.
The on-loan Danish international is Sunderland’s most experienced forward and his absence will mean that youngsters Connor Wickham and Ji Dong-Won will have to deputise for the Black Cats.
Stephane Sessegnon has lent a hand in the attacking duties of the club this campaign but isn’t a natural forward and will undoubtedly need an outlet to feed into.
The North East outfit have been linked with numerous attackers over the course of the January transfer window as the club look to push on in their Premier League ascension under O’Neill.
Since the Northern Irishman took over the managerial position at the club, Sunderland have seen a significant boost in performance and morale, but will need an extra attacker if that is to continue.
Doyle has been linked with moves to West Brom and Arsenal in the past year and could be keen to exit the Molineux given the current predicament at the club.
The 28 year-old could be available for as little as £6m and Wolves may cash in on their player should his asking price be met by Ellis Short funded Sunderland.
