Sunderland ready to capture Irish striker

Steve Bruce’s Sunderland are set to complete the signature of Derry City star, James McClean, who has just revealed his intentions to switch allegiance from Northern Ireland to Republic of Ireland.

The 22 year-old undergoes a medical with the north-east side today, and is hoping the move will increase his chances of making it into the Republic side.

Nigel Worthington had named the forward in his squad to face Faroe Islands this week, but McClean pulled out and will be available for Republic selection due to only representing Northern Ireland at youth level.

The youngster spoke to the Belfast Telegraph, noting: “It was a blow seeing Irish League players being called up before me to the Northern Ireland squad, but having got the call I was relieved.”

He added: “However, it’s always been my dream to play for the Republic and hopefully that will become a reality now that I’m going to be a Sunderland player.”
