Paolo Di Canio has been kit with the bad news that first-choice goalkeeper, Mattia Lanzano, will miss the start of the League Two season after it was revealed his injury is worse than expected.
After arriving earlier on in the summer, Lanzano kept clean sheets in both of the Robins’ pre-season friendlies in Italy.
Swindon begin their league campaign next Saturday on August 6, and after thinking the rib injury sustained in training would only keep the stopper out for a couple of days, it’s now been revealed that Lanzano will miss season’s start.
“He has some fibres that may be broken and our physio has checked him and believes he will take some time to recover,” Di Canio told the Gazette and Herald.
In Lanzano’s absence, second-choice keeper, Phil Smith, will fill in. Di Canio commented: “Phil Smith has done very well in the last two friendly games so I feel confident. He has improved since my arrival. His positional sense and communication with his defence is very good.”
