For a few years now Liverpool have been an up and down team in the transfer window ( and the Premiership) acquiring fantastic signings such as Daniel Agger, Pepe Reina, Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll, and those signings who haven’t quite made the Liverpool spotlight such as Andriy Voronin, Philipp Degen , Robbie Keane and Alberto Aqualani. Since 1990, Liverpool have spent in the region of £520 million, but what have been the top”flops” since then? not including Roy Hodgson.
There is no doubt that after an extremely exciting transfer deadline day Liverpool have acquired two vital assets in Luis Suarez for £22 million from Ajax and the most expensive player in British football at £35 million from Newcastle for the towering figure of Andy Carroll, however losing the services of ex kop hero Fernando Torres to Chelsea for a British record fee of £50 million.
Many people believe that Liverpool have come out of the transfer window a better team than when they entered it. In the summer transfer period however, Liverpool need to look for a winger who will actually stay at the club for more than two seasons.
If you look at the wingers Liverpool have acquired in the past few seasons, Albert Riera who left after falling out with one of Liverpool’s former managers Rafael Benitez, originally signed a 4 year deal at the club, but ended up leaving after two. Obviously he got fed up with his manager’s untranslatable hand gestures.
Another winger, Mark Gonzalez, who signed for the Reds on July 5, 2006 but left in the summer of 2007.
I believe a good singing for Liverpool would be Charles Nzogbia, a left or right winger currently playing for Wigan Athletic.
Liverpool have been linked with the 25 year old French winger in the past, and only a suitable amount of money will tempt Roberto Martinez to sell him in the summer, and hopefully Kenny Dalglish’s pronunciation will convince the once named Charles Insomnia to stay beyond two seasons. If not Nzogbia, what other wingers would you like to see arrive at the red half of Merseyside?
Another previously linked player Charlie Adam would be welcomed at Liverpool after impressive eye-catching performances for Blackpool this season. The reds were strongly linked with the midfielder during the January transfer window, and reports suggested Liverpool had sent a car to Blackpool to pick Charlie Adam up.
But in fact the car was just sending a “Do not employee Roy Hodgson” letter to Ian Holloway if he decided to resign from his post following the charges from the F.A for fielding a weakened team. Obviously the letter to the The Hawthorn’s got lost in the post. But I believe Charlie Adam would be a good asset to the reds, as it would allow Lucas Leiva to push further up….the substitute’s bench.
Another winger now in the shape of Aston Villa’s prized possession Ashley Young. The 26 year old has been linked with Liverpool the last few transfer windows but nothing has ever quite materialised. Young has earned 12 caps for England and was a main transfer target for Roy Hodgson, but the 64 year old didn’t survive long enough in the Anfield hot seat, and maybe Mr Dalglish, providing he still has the job which many Liverpool fans desire, can persuade the new owners to splash more of their cash.
So with the new owners already showing their ambition to take Liverpool back to the top, will their money prove to be well spent? With Luis Suarez already bagging a goal against Stoke City earlier this month, will Premiership new boy Andy Carroll prove to be worth his £35 million price tag?
