Tiger Woods spitting apology unnecessary

Tiger Woods has come under fire again, this time perhaps unnecessarilySpitting: To eject saliva as an expression of aversion or contempt. This what I found to be the explanation when looking for the word “spitting” in the online dictionary. Not that most sports persons tend to use it as an expression, merely to remove excess fluid from their mouth.

Tiger Woods’ recent spitting at the golf tournament in Qatar has now been apologised for on the famous but now almost infamous twitter website. The fact of the matter is spitting and indeed swearing on any golf course has been going for years. They all do it, Woods, however, with his private life almost known by every human being, was always going to make headline news if he were to be caught and he was.

But let us step back for one moment onto the amateur gold scene, where week in, week out, many of us swear so badly that we wonder if we might get our marching orders from the local golf club. We have all been there, a poor swing, a poor putt attempt, or even after our 8th stroke to get us out of the sand. No one ever complains gold is easy, and with that comes the option to make things feel a little better inside by swearing.

The spitting situation is possibly a little different, I tend to go somewhere in the rough, which by all accounts is most of the time, to spit, I certainly won’t spit on the green although, hands up, yes, I have spat on the fairway a few times. The difference is that no one is filming me, thank goodness.

Many are suggesting that a sportsman of Tiger Woods’ ability and fame should not be showing the younger generation that such an act is wrong but I would be happy to bet a large amount of money that these “youngsters” had already spat on a golf course prior to seeing one of their idols do it.

Others feel that golf is on a higher ground than that of other sports like football or cricket. Wrong, at the end of the day, and where professionalism is concerned, players are paid to perform to their very best, if they do not, they do not earn a living. If swearing or spitting can help them achieve their primary goal then so be it, although it might be a good idea for golfers to be a little more discreet with so many cameras about.

I’m off to the putting green to find out if the groundsmen swear as much as I do after I finish.
