The race is the first major two-mile chase of the season and pulls together the two outstanding novices from last season that have yet to meet at a racecourse.

Sprinter Sacre finished last season rated the top novice chaser after winning the Racing Post Arkle Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, in what was being describes as one of the most impressive one-off performances in recent history at Prestbury Park.

There were doubts over Sprinter Sacre’s participation in the race with the rain pouring down over the past week and the horse never having encounter ground softer than good before.

However, trainer Nicky Henderson has said he’s going to run his star chaser whatever the weather on Saturday, which is great news for punters. Sprinter Sacre has been sensational since tackling the large obstacles. He won five from five over fences last season, all done in a style that we have rarely seen at the top level.

His jumping is imperious and he attacks every fence with an aggression that makes him look near unbeatable. Henderson’s chaser was never off the bridle last season in his wins, and that included his seven length demolition job on Cue Card in the Arkle Chase, where subsequent Paddy Power Gold Cup winner Al Ferof was back in third.

However, Sanctuaire, trainer by Paul Nicholls, is only 3lbs behind him in the ratings following an equally impressive novice chase campaign that finished with him thrashing Somersby at Aintree.

The Nicholls camp has been rather bullish about getting the better of Sprinter Sacre, but the markets tend to side with Henderson’s flamboyant chaser to keep up his unbeaten record over fences. The 1/2 available with most firms has all but gone and punters have been backing the 4/9 with Bet365, Coral and BetVictor, whilst Ladbrokes are really running for cover and have only gone 2/5 about Henderson’s star making a winning reappearance.

Sanctuarie can backed at a best priced 9/4 with Bet365 and Ladbrokes, which could turn out to be a decent price if Sprinter Sacre performs below standard in ground which won’t be ideal for him.

However, Henderson has assured punters Sprinter Sacre will be somewhere hear his best this weekend and that’s good enough for us. Even though there is only 3lbs between them on figures, in our view Sanctuarie is flattered by his mark and Sprinter Sacre has room to improve on his.

Nearly every horse beaten by Sprinter Sacre has come out and franked the form, showing that his performances have been out of the top draw. Even at odds-on prices, he rates a solid betting proposition.

There could be a chance that as the whole world and his wife have billed this race as a match-up, neither will run to form, and an outsider will come and land the spoils.

That was the case in the 2010 Cheltenham Gold Cup where the supposed battle between Kauto Star and Denman was upset by Imperial Commander running out an impressive winner for trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies. Although, that looks unlikely here, a chance could be given to Alan King’s Kumbeshwar, if the front two fail to fire.

The 25/1 shot with Ladbrokes, has been busy already this season with three runs but won his last race at Haydock and could build on that performance if he gets his jumping right
