David Moyes has admitted that his Everton side lacked firepower in the final third of the pitch in Saturday’s game following their 1-0 defeat at home to QPR.
Tommy Smith scored the only goal to condemn the hosts to an agonising seventh opening day defeat in nine years; however Moyes admits his side did not challenge enough for all three points, but still felt they deserved a draw.
Moyes said “We didn’t play well enough probably to win, but I don’t know if we were that bad that we deserved to lose either.”
Just moments before Smith’s goal, left-back Leighton Baines smashed the cross bar from a free-kick. Plus efforts from Tim Cahill, Ross Barkley and Marouane Fellaini went close.
Moyes went on to say “I don’t think we gave QPR too many opportunities but they got one chance that went past the post and then the goal that was poor play from us defensively.”
“We lacked the ability at the top end of the pitch to make a difference today.”
