Tottenham boss says that pay rise will ward away Modric interest

Tottenham manger, Harry Redknapp, has called upon club chairman, Daniel Levy, to have talks with Luka Modric about a new, more lucrative contract in order to tie the midfielder down to the club.

The Croatian star has already been subject to two bids from fellow Londoners Chelsea, the latest to be rejected thought to be worth £27m.

Now, the Blues are expected to return with a deal worth £30m as well as offering either Yossi Benayoun or Salomon Kalou, which Spurs are also poised to reject.

The playmaker still has an astonishing five years left to run on his current contract at White Hart Lane, and Redknapp feels a new contract which will increase Modric’s wages is just the key to keep him at the club.

The manager noted: “If they can have a meeting and resolve the whole situation and Daniel tells him we need him, he is important and that we are ambitious and will bring one or two players in, you might find the boy will be okay.”

The 25 year-old was left out of Monday’s team for the 3-0 defeat against Manchester United, with Redknapp claiming the player wasn’t mentally fit for the game. Commenting on the Chelsea move, the manager added: “Let’s be truthful. He wanted to go, but he has just got confused with it all.”
