Tottenham close in on Sigurdsson capture

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly closing in on the signing of midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson after hijacking his move to Liverpool according to the Mirror.

In a move that will anger Brendan Rodgers the Icelandic midfielder was expected to join the Reds bus is rumoured to have agreed terms over a move to White Hart Lane.

Sigurdsson is now reported to be on the verge of completing a move to managerless Spurs by the end of the week despite looking certain to reunite with the former Swansea manager at Anfield.

The 22-year-old enjoyed a superb six-month loan spell at the Liberty Stadium under Rodgers and looked certain to remain in south Wales next season after the club agreed a £6.8 million fee with Hoffenheim.

But after the Northern Irishman’s defection to Merseyside earlier this month the transfer broke down with Sigurdsson seemingly in favour of a move to Liverpool.

A 30-day deadline was imposed by the German clubs head coach Markus Babbel for a deal to be struck saying: “Gylfi wants to stay in England and is in negotiations there,” he said. “Thus it makes no sense for both sides for him to return to Hoffenheim, perhaps only for a few days.

“If, by the deadline on June 30, he has done nothing then he will return to his pre-season with us. We have agreed this with him.”

However it’s now understood that he will snub Rodgers’ advances to join Spurs after agreeing personal terms and will act as a replacement for Croatian star Luka Modric who looks set to depart North London for Real Madrid this summer..

The appointment of former Chelsea and Porto boss Andre Villas Boas as Harry Redknapp’s successor is also thought to be imminent. Talks are still ongoing with Ajax over Jan Vertonghen despite the Belgian defender insisting he wants to join the club.
