Tottenham are looking to exploit Inter Milan’s interest in Carlos Tevez by making a move for the Italian club’s forward Diego Milito.
Like Tevez, Milito is an Argentinian international, but now 32 he is unlikely to have much more of a future at the Italian club, especially if the Serie A giants are successful in their continuous pursuit of Manchester City’s Tevez – which will come to a close either way on transfer deadline day.
Milito scored both goals in Inter’s 2010 Champions League final victory over Bayern Munich when the Milan club were managed by Jose Mourinho, but the forward has been in and out of the team since and is keen to try out playing in England in the latter period of his career.
Spurs have been looking to recruit an experienced striker throughout the transfer window, but despite registering their interest in several targets they have so far come up short.
Backup for first-choice forward Emmanuel Adebayor currently amounts to Jermain Defoe and the unsettled Roman Pavlyuchenko, who despite seeing Spurs take up the option of extending his contract – largely to increase his fee – is still expected to move back to Russia before the window in his homeland closes in February.
Milito would add experience to a Spurs side still competing in both the Premier League and FA Cup, and would be available for around £6m.
His Italian passport would ensure that the 24-times capped Argentina international wouldn’t require a work permit, and with Harry Redknapp a known admirer since the forward’s days at Real Zaragoza – where he scored almost a goal every other game for three seasons – the move is expected to suit all parties.
