Tottenham staging late swoop for Championship stopper

Joining reported interest from Arsenal, Liverpool and Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur are now keen on acquiring the signature of Brighton starlet, Lewis Dunk.

The 20 year-old was recently arrested after being accused of assault but doesn’t appear to be letting his personal struggles affect his playing performances after the Seagulls saw Newcastle United out of the FA Cup over the weekend.

Dunk has impressed greatly in the first half of the season and has been a constant feature for the Championship side, making 27 starts this campaign.

Numerous Premier League sides are known to be monitoring the youngster’s situation at the AMEX Stadium but Spurs are now preparing to increase their interest in Dunk in order to push through a late January signature.

Sebatien Bassong and Vedran Corluka are rumoured to be on their way out of White Hart Lane with the latter currently in talks with Bayer Leverkusen and defensive reinforcements will be required.

Dunk received his first call-up to the England Under-21 squad in November 2011 and despite the fact that he failed to feature for the side, the centre-back continues to be tipped as a future English international.

Harry Redknapp hinted last month that he would be making a ‘major signing’ in January and while Dunk might not yet be ready for first team action with Spurs, his potential means that he could be in the near future.

Gus Poyet won’t be keen on losing such a constant fixture in his Brighton side but may not have a choice should top flight Spurs meet the player’s £5m valuation.
