Valencia pens contract extension

Manchester United winger, Antonio Valencia, has signed a four-year contract extension after it was feared that the club hit a stumbling block regarding image rights.

The Ecuadorian has made good progress at Old Trafford since his arrival from Wigan Athletic in 2009. However, this progress was halted by a broken ankle last season, that kept the winger out of action for five months.

The 25 year-old has made 69 appearances for the Premier League champions and will now see his contract run until the end of the 2014/15 season.

The arrival of Ashley Young means the competition for places will become harder than ever with the likes of Nani, Par Ji Sung and veteran Ryan Giggs all ready to pounce should a teammate falter.

Sir Alex Ferguson is also pleased with the South American. When speaking to the Guardian, Ferguson noted: “Antonio has made a fantastic contribution since his arrival. His speed, crossing ability and versatility have been a big asset for us. He has a quiet, unassuming way of going about his business, which is underlined by great strength of character – as his recovery from such a bad injury last season proves.”
