Arsenal may look to hasten their approach for Bolton defender, Gary Cahill, after Thomas Vermaelen was injured in Saturday’s friendly defeat to Benfica.
Steve Rowley, Arsenal’s chief scout, was on hand to watch Cahill in Bolton’s 1-0 defeat to Levante on Friday.
Wenger has been searching for a solution to his defensive woes all summer, but has so far seen advances for Cahill, Blackburn’s Christopher Samba and Everton’s Phil Jagielka, rejected.
The Bolton centre-back has a £17m release clause in his contract, but the Frenchman is unwilling to pay that amount, given that the defender only has 12 months left to run on his contract.
Another Englishman edging closer to signing for the Gunners is Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who looks set to seal a £12m move to the Emirates Stadium later this week.
