Chelsea youngster Romelu Lukaku is being targeted by La Liga side Villarreal as a potential loan signing when the transfer window re-opens in January.
Reports coming from Spain indicate the Yellow Submarines boss Juan Carlos Garrido is keen to sign the 18-year-old on loan to bolster his strike force at the Estadio El Madrigal.
An injury crisis has gripped the club with leading striker Giuseppe Rossi ruled out for six months and Garrido and president Fernando Roig have identified Lukaku as a short term replacement for the Italian.
It’s thought Villarreal are set to try and tempt the Blues into letting them take Belgian teenager on loan until the end of the season by promising to give him regular first team action.
Lukaku has been used sparingly by manager Andre Villas-Boas since signing from Anderlecht for £18 million in the summer with their wealth of forwards restricting him to substitute appearances and Carling Cup games.
Despite his lack of game time it’s unknown whether Chelsea would be prepared to ket the striker depart Stamford Bridge on loan or continue his development and adaption to the Premier League at the club.
Villarreal’s cause may be helped by after the London side were impressed by the way Daniel Sturridge flourished during his temporary stay at Bolton last season and will hoping for a similar scenario should Lukaku leave on loan.
