Tottenham Hotspur could be set to name Andre Villas-Boas as their new manager as early as this weekend according to reports.
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has plumped for the former Chelsea boss to fill Harry Redknapp’s shoes at White Hart Lane following his sacking two weeks ago for failing to agree terms on a new contract.
Villas-Boas also suffered the ignominy of being dismissed by Blues owner Roman Abramovich in March just eight-months into his reign at Stamford Bridge but Levy is prepared to overlook that and give him a second crack of the Premier League whip.
The North London club confirmed the departures of Redknapp’s assistant manager Kevin Bond and coach Joe Jorday on Thursday seemingly indicating that a new manager is imminent.
The odds on the 34-year-old coach being installed have also been shortened and it’s rumoured that an announcement will be made in the new couple of days confirming his appointment.
One of the first problems Villas-Boas have to address will be Luka Modric’s desire to leave Tottenham having gone on record as saying he wants to play for a club in the Champions League.
Spanish champions Real Madrid waiting in the wings, ready to make a £30 million offer for the Croatian playmaker whilst it’s been reported in the London Evening Standard that AVB will raid two of his former clubs to bolster his squad.
It’s thought he wants to sign Porto midfielder Joao Moutinho to replace Modric and Daniel Sturridge from Chelsea to boost his attack after Emmanuel Adebayor’s loan-spell ended and he returned to Manchester City.
He’ll also be buoyed by Gareth Bale’s decision to extend his stay at Spurs after signing a new four-year contract and declaring that he wants to take the club back into Europe’s elite competition.
