There were plenty of goals in the most recent Premier League weekend, with plenty of entertainment on show. There was even a surprise result or two thrown in to make it another exciting two days in English football’s top flight.
On Saturday, there were eight games and no less than 26 goals. The drama began with a thrilling London derby at White Hart Lane too. Tottenham came from behind to lead Chelsea 2-1, but the league leaders stormed back to win the game 4-2.
Juan Mata was influential in the win for the Blues as they displayed the superb attacking credentials that have seen them remain four points clear at the top of the table.
Following this lunch-time kick-off, there was a bizarre start to the 3pm kick-offs as Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney scored an own-goal at home to Stoke City.
The England man soon redeemed himself though scoring the equalising goal before rounding off a 4-2 win for the Red Devils. As has been the case a few times this season, Sir Alex Ferguson’s men didn’t make it easy for themselves, but they secured the three points.
Elsewhere, there were narrow 1-0 home wins for Fulham and Liverpool over Aston Villa and Reading respectively, while Swansea picked up a valuable 2-1 victory at home to Wigan Athletic.
Becoming the third team to score four goals on Saturday, West Ham continued their fine return to the Premier League as they exposed a fragile Southampton defence to win 4-1. Sam Allardyce has now guided his team to 7th in the table, while the Saints are struggling in 18th position.
The biggest shock of the day came in the 5.30pm kick-off at Carrow Road. Norwich City – without a win prior to this game – fought hard for a 1-0 victory over an in-form Arsenal side, with Grant Holt scoring the only goal of the game in the first-half.
Moving onto Sunday, there was one of the biggest games of the weekend at 1.30pm as Sunderland and Newcastle competed in the North East derby.
Despite having ten men for the majority of the game, it looked as though the Magpies were going to hold onto a famous 1-0 win, but Demba Ba turned the ball into this own net late on to ensure that Sunderland got a share of the spoils.
Then, in the final game of the day, Queens Park Rangers were left still searching for their first win of the season as they drew at home to Everton.
Overall, it was another weekend to remember in the Premier League.
