Wenger believes Costa Rican risk will pay off

Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, has admitted that the Gunners’ acquisition of teenager Joel Campbell is a risk, but one that he believes will prove fruitful.

Arsenal have agreed terms with Campbell’s current club, Deportivo Saprissa, and are poised to sign the striker in a deal that is believed could cost as little as £1m.

Speaking to the Official Matchday Programme, Wenger stated: “Joel is a young prospect, he has talent and he can play right, left or centrally. We took a gamble on him but, from what we have seen, it is worth taking.”

The Frenchman added: “Sometimes you feel the reputation of the player is punished by the fact he did not have a massive transfer fee. You would like people to look just at the quality of the players and feel if they are Arsenal players or not.”

The 19 year-old has made six appearances for the Costa Rica national team, scoring twice in the process.
