Arsene Wenger has dismissed speculation that Alex Song could join Barcelona this summer insisting that he will be staying at Arsenal.
It’s been claimed in the Spanish press that the Catalan giants have submitted a €15million (£11.7m) offer for the Cameroon international with manager Tito Vilanova keen to bolster his defensive midfield options.
Song caught the eye last season with a number of impressive performances in the holding role and struck up a fruitful partnership with Robin Van Persie assisting a majority of the Dutchman’s 37-goal haul.
However Wenger insists there has been no contact from Barcelona and told them to forget about signing the 24-year-old insisting that he won’t be leaving the Emirates Stadium.
“There’s nothing going on with Song. There’s nothing in that,” Wenger told The Sun.
“Song has three years’ contract, he’s not in the same situation as Robin Van Persie.
“In Spain the newspapers are not really serious. We’ve had the experience of that. We’ve never had any contact with anybody from Barcelona.”
Song himself has already proclaimed his desire to remain with the North London and is open to extending his current contract despite it having two years left to run.
The former Bastia youngster told Sky Sports that he is aware of the interest in him, with Russian giants Zenit St Petersburg are also thought to be monitoring developments, but admitted he is content with life at Arsenal.
“I am not going to lie if I said there is no interest but I am at Arsenal and I am happy at Arsenal,” he said.
“Barcelona are the best team in the world, and speculation will always continue until the window closes.”
Wenger is keen to tie Song down to a new deal and make him one of the clubs top earners at £65,000-a-week to reflect his growing emergence as a top Premier League midfielder over the past year.
